Massachusetts hit-and-run accidents spike

Over the past couple of months, Massachusetts has seen a spike in the number of pedestrians being hit by cars. In most of these incidents, the vehicle fled the scene, leaving the pedestrian helpless.

These accidents are causing an alarming number of fatalities. Pedestrians must beware of reckless drivers in order to avoid injury or death.

The spike in accidents is frightening. To stay safe, pedestrians should:

  • Be aware of surroundings
  • Look out for reckless drivers
  • Wear bright-colored clothing
  • Don't assume a driver will stop for you, even if they should
  • Walk in safe areas-avoid walking at night

Even if you follow the precautions above, you may still be at risk. There were 85 pedestrian fatalities in Massachusetts, in 2017.

Certain areas may be more dangerous than others. On Mystic Ave. in Somerville, two pedestrians were hit by vehicles just a month apart. In both accidents, the driver fled the scene. One accident was fatal and the other left the pedestrian severely injured.

Hit-and-run accidents may be difficult to solve

It is difficult for police to catch drivers who commit hit-and-runs. The pedestrian may not be able to identify the vehicle or driver if they were severely injured. Police may rely on witnesses or street cameras to help solve these crimes.

Be aware of reckless drivers. Take caution when crossing roads or walking on the streets. Make yourself visible. Following these suggestions may help you stay safe.

If you or your loved one has been injured, speak with a personal injury attorney. An attorney may be able to help you get justice.
