Young man charged in fatal Massachusetts accident

On Behalf of | Nov 14, 2013 | Wrongful Death

Following an unfortunate fatal accident, a nineteen-year old man is facing charges related to the crash which left a 63-year old woman dead. The young man allegedly struck the victim and then left the scene of the accident which occurred in a neighboring community. Authorities allege that the young man walked back to the scene of the accident a short time later. He has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving death. The victim was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries.

Words are at a loss to describe how painful the loss of a loved one is. This pain can be compounded when the loss occurred unexpectedly and as a result of the negligence of another. In such circumstances, family members of victims should understand that a cause of action for wrongful death may exist to recover damages for aspects of the harm suffered that are compensable.

Damages that may be available to surviving family members through a wrongful death claim include medical and funeral expenses, lost prospect of inheritance, loss of companionship and loss of support and services. The amount of damages may depend on several factors, including characteristics of the victim. For instance, if the victim provided the majority of household services to the family, this fact may help determine the amount of compensation the family will receive.

Following the loss of a loved one, family members may feel overwhelmed as family members struggle with the emotional and practical challenges and considerations related to the loss. A personal injury attorney may be able to help the family receive compensation for the damages suffered so that fewer of those considerations require the family’s attention and focus.
