On Behalf of | Sep 26, 2013 | Car Accidents

A recent head-on crash in Canton, Massachusetts has resulted in the death of a woman and the arrest of a teenager. A 19-year-old man is being charged with motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation and a marked lanes violation following the fatal car crash.

The accident occurred when a Chevrolet Corvette driven by the young man crossed the center line and collided with a Chevy Trailblazer driven by the victim. The head-on collision killed the 65-year-old woman driving the Trailblazer. The driver of the Corvette and his passenger were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The accident investigation is ongoing.

The unexpected loss of a loved one in a car accident can leave a family overwhelmed and not knowing what to do. Losing a loved one in any circumstance is difficult but when it is the result of the wrongful or negligent conduct of another party, it can be particularly hard. In addition to the emotional trauma, financial worries may also arise, particularly if others depended on the victim for support. The law provides that the victim’s family can bring a wrongful death claim against a negligent driver responsible for the loss of the loved one.

Several categories of damages can be recovered by surviving family members in a wrongful death case. They include medical and funeral expenses, loss of support, loss of services and loss of companionship. In many cases expert economists will testify as to the future earning capacity of the decedent. An experienced personal injury attorney can help families seek compensation for the harm that they have suffered.
