Husband killed in Fitchburg motorcycle crash, wife injured

On Behalf of | Aug 2, 2012 | Motorcycle Accidents

What was the exact cause of a car accident? Investigators in Worcester and throughout Massachusetts ask that question every week. Too often, the answer is directly related to a driver’s negligence, and too often the results of such crashes are devastating.

Unfortunately, that was the case in a recent motorcycle accident that took the life of a Fitchburg woman’s husband. The husband and wife were riding their motorcycle on Boulder Drive in Fitchburg when an SUV driven by an 18-year-old Berlin man struck them.

The 60-year-old husband was driving the motorcycle at the time of the crash. Two medical helicopters were called to the scene, and he was taken to University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester where he was sadly pronounced dead.

The man’s wife was also injured, and a hospital staff member at UMass has since indicated that the woman’s condition has stabilized. However, her emotional state after her immense loss is likely another matter.

The SUV driver was reportedly not injured, and a local news site did not indicate whether police had determined who was at fault for the collision.

Fatal accidents often take time to fully investigate. Upon the results of such investigations, the family of a deceased victim may decide to pursue a wrongful death claim if a driver in the crash is thought to have been negligent. Wrongful death claims are filed when the death of a loved one presents a financial hardship to the family members.

In this case, if the driver of the SUV was driving in a reckless or negligent manner, the woman who lost her husband could claim the wrongfulness of his death and receive monetary compensation. Such compensation is usually meant to cover lost wages and other expenses brought on by the death of a loved one.
