Last week's blog focused on the incidence of dog bite attacks. This week's blog focuses on the costs associated with dog bites and dog bite injuries. When a victim has been injured by a dog bite in Massachusetts, pet owners are commonly liable to compensate victims for their injuries and damages regardless of liability except in a few special circumstances.

Spring always brings the return of motorcyclists to the roadways. Motorcycle riders may look forward to a summer of fun, however, other vehicles on the roadways can pose a danger to motorcyclists. Greater than half of all motorcycle accidents involve another motor vehicle and liability for the motorcycle accident most often rests with the driver of the other motor vehicle.

Pet owners strictly liable in Massachusetts with some exceptions

In general, pet owners are strictly liable in Massachusetts for harm their pets cause with some exceptions. A dog was recently saved from euthanization in a neighboring Massachusetts' community just west of Worcester. Authorities deemed the dog dangerous. Greater than 100 people from the community showed support for the dog who belongs to a local restaurant owner. According to police, the dog has bitten twelve people. According to supporters for the dog, individuals who have been bitten by the dog have been trespassing at the time the dog bite occurred.

How serious is the problem of dog bites in Massachusetts?

It is often noted that dogs are man's best friend. However, sometimes, circumstances can instead lead to a dog attack. Victims of dog attacks may be left with serious and disfiguring injuries, as well as physical and emotional scars. In Massachusetts, during 2006, there were 6,300 dog bite injuries that required medical attention. Of those injuries, 146 of them required admission to the hospital for treatment.

Hit-and-run auto accident kills Massachusetts pedestrian

Victims and families of victims of drunk driving accidents should understand that options may be available to protect them following an auto accident. A series of fatal hit-and-run and pedestrian accidents in a Massachusetts' community an hour southeast of Worcester have claimed the lives of multiple victims. Most recently, a 26-year old woman was killed. A 53-year old woman was arrested following the woman's death. The driver was charged with drunken driving causing serious injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident. Authorities noted additional charges are possible following the 26-year old pedestrian's death.

Air National Guard member killed in motorcycle crash

Motorcycle accidents can cause significant harm to victims and their families. An accident between two cars and a motorcycle recently killed a motorcycle rider, who was a member of the Air National Guard, in a nearby community in Massachusetts. The motorcycle accident occurred near an intersection. Occupants of the vehicles were transported to the hospital but reportedly did not have serious injuries. Officials from multiple law enforcement agencies are investigating the cause of the fatal motorcycle accident.

Motorcyclist injured while passenger vehicle driver flees

Motorcycle accident victims may receive help facing various challenges following a motorcycle collision. In a neighboring community an hour-and-a-half southeast of Worcester, a motorcyclist had to be transported to the hospital following a collision between a passenger vehicle and the motorcycle. The driver of the passenger vehicle fled the scene of the accident. Although a man was picked up by police at a nearby business with serious injuries, police did not confirm that the man was the driver of the passenger vehicle that fled. Police are investigating the motorcycle collision.

A look at Massachusetts' dog-bite law

Animal attacks and dog bites are a serious concern throughout the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 4.5 million people in the United States are bitten by a dog each year; of that number, half of the victims are children. Of those bitten, one in five requires medical attention and treatment for the dog bite; again, half of the 885,000 individuals who are bitten and require medical attention and treatment are children. In addition, in 2012, 27,000 individuals had to undergo reconstructive surgery due to dog bite injuries which can often result in scarring or disfigurement.

Pet cat saves boy from animal attack after boy suffers dog bite

A dog bite injury can have serious physical, emotional and financial consequences. A significant amount of recent media attention has focused on a cat that saved a 4-year-old boy from a dog attack. The little boy was riding a small bike when the dog snuck up behind the boy, attacked him and pulled him off of the bike. The cat attacked the 8-month old dog and continued to chase the dog out of the family's driveway.

Worcester motorcycle accident severely injures motorcyclist

When a victim has been injured by someone else, the legal system, when called upon, makes efforts to step in and help through an award of damages whenever appropriate. This is especially true when the negligence of another caused a victim much damage by seriously injuring them.
